After a successful amateur career Tinning turned professional in 1985. However, his career was interrupted when he and his wife were involved in a multiple-car crash in Germany in which they were lucky to escape with their lives. His right arm was detached, left dangling by skin and muscle, which kept him out of action for 18 months.

Tinning recovered from the car crash and incredibly went on to win two European Tour events, the 2000 Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open and the 2002 Telefonica Open de Madrid.
The Dane then went on to win twice on the Senior Tour at the Berenberg Masters and at the English Senior Open, in his first season on the Senior Tour.
