Won his only European Tour title to date in his first season on Tour, capturing the 1996 Air France Cannes Open. Learned the game under the tutelage of Bob Torrance, often making five hour round trips from his home in Prestonpans to Largs for coaching.

Started the year playing on the ALLIANZ Tour in France and reliant on sponsors’ invitations to compete on the Challenge Tour after losing his playing privileges, but ended it clutching a coveted European Tour card to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes. His two runner-up finishes, at the ALLIANZ Open Cotes d’Armor Bretagne and the SWALEC Wales Challenge, were both crucial results as they helped improve his category, but were perhaps overshadowed by his performance at the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, where he came good when he needed to most. Went into the week in 21st place in the Rankings, but ended it 19th thanks largely to a closing round of 68 at San Domenico Golf which featured four vital birdies on the back nine.
