His only win on the Tour came in 2019 at the European Tour Destinations Senior Classic at PGA Catalunya in his homeland of Spain.
He played on the DP World Tour from 1985 to 2008, coming closest to a win at the 1992 German Open where he finished as runner-up to Vijay Singh. Carriles was twice a winner on the Challenge Tour, including the 2003 Grand Final.
Carriles comes from Pedreña in northern Spain, the hometown of the late Seve Ballesteros. Like Seve, José learned to play golf on the beaches of Pedreña.
