Staysure Legends Tour player Henrik Stenson will head into the weekend of the U.S. Senior Open Championship firmly in contention after a second-round three-under-par 67 moved the Swede to two-under-par for the championship and into a share of sixth place at Scioto Country Club in Ohio.
American George McNeill leads the championship at six-under-par after posting the lowest round of the week, a four-under-par 66, to take a two-shot advantage into the weekend. Defending champion Padraig Harrington sits alone in second on four-under, while Miguel Angel Jiménez shares third place alongside Stewart Cink and Charlie Wi at three-under. Stenson is one of seven players tied for sixth at two-under-par, with just eight shots separating the top 22 players and everything still to play for over the final 36 holes at Scioto Country Club.
Making his first appearance in the championship, the 2016 Open Champion produced a composed performance featuring four birdies and a solitary bogey to move within four shots of the lead held by McNeill.
Stenson’s impressive showing comes just months after making his Staysure Legends Tour debut at the Barbados Legends hosted by Ian Woosnam. The Swede made an immediate impression at Apes Hill, recovering from an opening-round 72 with rounds of 69 and 68 to finish tied 20th in his first appearance on the Tour.
Speaking after his round, Stenson admitted that managing the challenging conditions would be key heading into the weekend.
“I will not step outside the AC more today other than going to my car and from the car to the hotel,” said Stenson. “It’s conserving energy. I’m not really going to become any better by spending another hour out in the heat. I’m playing with what I have this week and trying to do my best.”
Another familiar Staysure Legends Tour face firmly in the hunt is Miguel Angel Jiménez. The Spaniard followed his opening-round 69 with a four-under-par 68 to move to three-under-par overall and into a share of third place, just three strokes behind McNeill.
Jiménez has already demonstrated his form on the Staysure Legends Tour this season, recording a fourth-place finish at the Staysure Marbella Legends after sharing the first-round lead on home soil at Aloha Golf Club. The Spaniard once again showcased the consistency and quality that have made him one of senior golf’s most formidable competitors.
Meanwhile, Simon Griffiths slipped back to tied 16th after a second-round 72. Having shared second place after the opening round, the Englishman still remains in the mix heading into the weekend, while Staysure Marbella Legends winner and Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson also remains in contention in a share of 10th place at one-under-par, with the leaderboard tightly packed.
With a host of Staysure Legends Tour players firmly in contention and the leaderboard tightly packed, everything remains to play for heading into the final 36 holes at Scioto Country Club.
