Major champions, Ryder Cup legends and one of golf’s biggest fan favourites will gather in Aberdeen this week as the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship returns to Trump International Golf Links for the flagship event on the Staysure Legends Tour calendar.

The championship also marks the first professional tournament to be played on the acclaimed New Course, a significant milestone for one of Scotland’s newest championship layouts.

The field is headlined by tournament host and eight-time European Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie, alongside 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie, who returns to compete on home soil alongside fellow Scot and 2027 Junior Ryder Cup Captain Stephen Gallacher. Also in the field will be 2005 U.S. Open Champion Michael Campbell, 2014 Ryder Cup hero Jamie Donaldson, whose iconic approach shot at Gleneagles secured the winning point for Europe under the captaincy of fellow competitor Paul McGinley, the 2014 European Ryder Cup-winning captain, along with defending champion Bo Van Pelt, who returns after his sudden-death play-off victory over South Africa’s Darren Fichardt to claim his maiden Staysure Legends Tour title in dramatic fashion last year.

Also joining the field is Michael Block, the American PGA Professional whose incredible performance at the 2023 PGA Championship made him one of golf’s most recognisable figures. Working as a club professional in California, Block captured the imagination of golf fans around the world by making the cut, playing alongside Rory McIlroy in the final round, making a memorable hole-in-one and finishing tied 15th against the game’s biggest stars. Since turning 50, he has begun competing in senior competitions and now makes his debut at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.

Tournament host Montgomerie believes this year’s championship will provide another memorable week for players and spectators alike.

“I’m absolutely honoured and extremely proud to be hosting the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship for a third time. The Staysure Legends Tour is going from strength to strength, and this is very much the flagship event of the season at one of the world’s great golf courses.

“I’m sure it’s going to be another memorable week and we are all looking forward to seeing thousands of golf fans out on the fairways as the players take on the stern challenge this course presents.”

Returning to defend his title, Van Pelt is hoping to build on last year’s memorable victory.

“It’s always great to come back to a place where you have such good memories,” said Van Pelt. “Last year was definitely a bit of a pinch-me moment. Having my son on the bag and getting the win after it had been a long time since I’d won a tournament made it incredibly special.

“The finish had so much drama, but when we got into the play-off it almost felt like a new lease on life. My son said to me walking to the last, ‘If someone had told us on Wednesday you’d have one hole to play to win this tournament, you’d be pumped.’ That completely changed my mindset. We just went out, had some fun and thankfully it all worked out. It’s a memory I’ll always treasure.”

Block, meanwhile, is relishing the opportunity to tee it up alongside many of the players he grew up watching as he embarks on a new chapter in his career.

“It feels amazing. For 10 years, from 40 to 49, I felt old. Then all of a sudden you turn 50, you get out here again and you feel young. It’s a really cool experience and something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.

“I’ve watched the Staysure Legends Tour for the last couple of years and even looked at coming through Qualifying School. To be here now, with Colin hosting at a venue like Trump International, is pretty amazing. I’m just happy to be here.”

Block also revealed his ambition to become a regular on the Staysure Legends Tour.

“I’d love to be able to come over here and play. Later in the season the Tour goes to Portugal, Spain and Italy, and I’d love to bring my family over, play some of the most beautiful places in the world and hopefully play well. The Staysure Legends Tour is growing and I’d love to be part of it.”

Away from the fairways, spectators can enjoy four days of entertainment, with a packed spectator village featuring food and drink, interactive partner activations, family entertainment and opportunities to get closer to the game. Tournament play gets underway from Friday to Sunday.
