Miguel Angel Jiménez will head into the final round of the U.S. Senior Open Championship firmly in contention after a third-round three-under-par 67 left the Spaniard just three shots off the lead at Scioto Country Club in Ohio.

The Staysure Legends Tour player moved to six-under-par for the championship with another assured display, carding an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys to climb into outright fourth place heading into Sunday’s final round.

American Stewart Cink will take a one-shot advantage into the final day after firing a brilliant bogey-free six-under-par 64 to move to nine-under-par overall. Defending champion Padraig Harrington sits second on eight-under, while 36-hole leader George McNeill remains in contention on seven-under. Jiménez, who finished third in last year’s championship after a stunning final-round 64, is once again perfectly placed to mount a Sunday charge.

The 62-year-old has already demonstrated his form on the Staysure Legends Tour this season, recording a fourth-place finish at the Staysure Marbella Legends after sharing the first-round lead on home soil at Aloha Golf Club. A six-time top-10 finisher in the U.S. Senior Open, Jiménez once again showcased the consistency and resilience that have made him one of senior golf’s most enduring competitors.

Speaking after his round, Jiménez reflected on his longevity in the game and the enjoyment he continues to take from competing at the highest level.

“I’m doing what I like to do in my life, and that is God give me the means to continue working every day, stretching, and enjoying myself. That’s the only thing I know what to do. And then I know how to keep flexible, I need to keep my routines, and that’s the way I still feel good.”

Elsewhere, Simon Griffiths continued his impressive week by moving back inside the top 10 after a third-round two-under-par 68 lifted the Englishman to two-under-par for the championship and into a share of seventh place. Griffiths, who shared second place after the opening round, remains firmly in the hunt heading into the final day.

Staysure Marbella Legends winner Jamie Donaldson is also well placed after a third-round 69 moved him to two-under-par and into a share of seventh. Donaldson, who famously secured the winning point for Europe at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, remains within striking distance with 18 holes remaining.

With just seven shots separating the top 14 players on the leaderboard, there remains everything to play for heading into Sunday’s final round, with Jiménez, Griffiths and Donaldson all firmly in the mix as the U.S. Senior Open reaches what promises to be a thrilling conclusion at Scioto Country Club.
