Stephen Gallacher produced the standout performance of the final day at the ISPS HANDA Senior Open, firing a sensational eight-under-par 62 – the lowest round of the championship – to surge into fifth place as Jerry Kelly claimed his maiden Senior Open title at Gleneagles.

The Ryder Cup star, playing on a course steeped in his own golfing history, started the day ten shots adrift but threatened an extraordinary charge with a blistering outward nine of 29 before eventually finishing on six under par, just four shots behind champion Kelly.

It capped another encouraging week for the Scot, who once again showed why he remains one of the Staysure Legends Tour’s leading names ahead of a busy second half of the season.

Kelly held his nerve superbly in difficult conditions to close with a two-under 68 and finish on ten under par, securing his third Senior Major Championship after withstanding a strong challenge from fellow American Matt Gogel.

Australia’s Cameron Percy, who led after both the opening and third rounds, and 2025 Barry Lane Rookie of the Year Darren Fichardt shared second alongside Gogel on eight under after another impressive performance from the South African.

Fichardt continued the consistency that earned him Rookie of the Year honours last season, while Italy’s Emanuele Canonica maintained his excellent run of form with a closing 65 to finish tied seventh. Canonica has now recorded top finishes in successive starts after contending throughout the OFX Irish Legends earlier this month.

Gallacher’s final-day heroics were one of the stories of the championship.

Having battled the demanding King’s Course and relentless winds over the opening three rounds, Sunday morning rain softened conditions just enough for scoring opportunities, and the home favourite seized them.

Birdies flowed from the outset as he reached the turn in just 29 strokes before adding further gains at the 10th and 11th to briefly ignite hopes of an unlikely victory charge. Although a bogey at the 12th halted his momentum, he finished with two more birdies to post the round of the week.

“It’s not often you come off disappointed after shooting 62,” Gallacher said.

“It was just one of those days where I played really well. I gave myself plenty of chances, holed a few putts and probably missed a few as well. I’m delighted with it.

“We’d been battered for three days with the wind. Today there was a little bit of rain that just took the edge off the course, so you knew if you got off to a good start you could post a score.

“I have such an affinity with Gleneagles. I made my professional debut here as an amateur, then there are all the Ryder Cup memories. It’s just a great place.”

At the top of the leaderboard, Kelly produced a composed display throughout the afternoon.

After birdies at the first and third gave him early control, the American saw his lead cut to just one as Gogel posted a brilliant bogey-free 63 from earlier in the day. But Kelly’s experience showed over the closing stretch, repeatedly saving pars before producing a clutch birdie on the 18th to seal a memorable victory.

“It’s indescribable to win it,” Kelly said.

“The senior Claret Jug is the trophy I’ve wanted more than any other since turning 50. To win it here in Scotland, the Home of Golf, means everything.

“My brain was probably the strongest part of my game today. Years ago I’d have got frustrated by not hitting it perfectly, but today I just focused on the next shot. I learned a lot about myself.”

Percy’s hopes of converting his overnight share of the lead faded after a level-par 70, while Fichardt’s closing 66 secured another podium finish.

Further down the leaderboard, Canonica’s final-round 65 moved him into a share of seventh, continuing the momentum built with his strong showing at the OFX Irish Legends, where he was among the contenders throughout the week.

For Gallacher, meanwhile, a closing 62 provided the perfect way to leave Gleneagles and underlined the form that has made him one of the Staysure Legends Tour’s players to watch heading into the remainder of the 2026 season.
