Fitzgerald carded an impressive round of 80 (nett 67) for 41 points and the individual title, finishing two points clear of Gaelic Football manager Jim Gavin and a further point ahead of former Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton.
Fitzgerald, who played alongside Legends Tour professional Robert Coles, was delighted to be able to make such a significant donation to his chosen charity. “The Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin is such a fantastic charity and this is an unbelievable amount of money to be able to give to them,” said Fitzgerald.
“I’m absolutely over the moon. Some of my friends have had their kids treated in there, some of them for months. The work they do to support children and their families is phenomenal because kids are so vulnerable. So to be able to get them that amount of money from the Legends Tour is brilliant. I’m so grateful and I know that it’s going to make a massive difference and really enable them to help even more kids. It just means the world.
“I’m genuinely shocked that I won. I’ve had such a fantastic time at the Luxe Scot Celebrity Pro-Am – I haven’t played much recently but I holed a few putts and somehow managed to come out on top. To say I’m shocked is an understatement. It was so much fun out there and Mount Juliet was set up beautifully. And when you get weather like this in Ireland there’s nowhere better.”
In addition to £10,000 for Fitzgerald’s chosen charity, the Legends Tour also put up another £10,000 for the celebrities finishing second and third to donate to their preferred good causes.
Jim Gavin, former Dublin Gaelic Football manager, will be donating £7,500 to the Dublin Neurological Society, while former Aston Villa and Liverpool defender Steve Staunton won £2,500 for the Shabra Charity after chipping in at the final hole to secure third place in the individual celebrity competition and help his team to win overall.
The OFX Irish Legends – the third event of the 2025 season – begins on Thursday with Brazilian Adilson da Silva defending the title he won in a play-off at Seapoint last year. The field also includes Major champions Paul Lawrie and Michael Campbell, along with proven Tour winners such as Greg Owen, Simon Khan, James Kingston and Rob Coles.
Ryder Cup players Stephen Gallacher, Peter Baker, Niclas Fasth, David Gilford and Philip Price, along with Swedish duo Jarmo Sandelin and Joakim Haeggman, are also in the field. Ireland will be well represented by David Higgins and local favourite Gary Murphy.
